At The Hawthorns – Saturday 6th April 2013
The visit of the ‘Gunners’ to the ‘Home of football’ will always create interest for the ‘Baggies faithful’ and with Arsenal still in the Champions League places chase, it was simply a game the Londoners had to win.
After the euphoria of Albion’s fantastic win at Anfield, that signalled the Baggies first ‘double’ over the men of Liverpool in the best part of fifty years, the visit of Sunderland was always going to be another tough test of the Albion’s resolve.
Still no wins on the board in 2013 for the Baggies, after ‘The Spurs’ from White Hart Lane, took full advantage of Goran Popov’s early second half dismissal for ‘spitting at an opponent’.
Through the years there have been some ‘ding-dong’ local ‘derbies’ with the old foe from four miles down the Witton Road, but none in recent memory that changed distinctly at the change of ends.
Albion’s New Year’s Day curse struck again. This time Martin Jol’s side came and conquered a Baggies side once again unable to get out of the blocks for the yearly opener.
