“Any new season is eagerly awaited and vital fixtures anticipated, by football fans all over our nation, Albion fans being no different of course, would have been looking forward to The Hawthorns opener against ‘The Lions of Millwall’ for some time now. However, this new season, or more to the point, the pre-season transfer window, has without doubt generated an extra excitement amongst all ‘Baggies’ given the intoduction of no fewer than nine new faces into the first team squad, as the new campaign gets under way.
There were actually two welcome ‘new faces’ in the Regis suite for the match, with Mark Trenter, on ‘tour’ from his home in Australia’, youth cup winner in 1976 and Bruce Collard younger brother of Ian, joining Stewart Woolgar, Gary Hackett and the one and only Stan Jones, along with the very welcome contingent from the PFA.
On the other side of the Shrine, Steve Lillwall, Ian Hamilton and Darryl Burgess were ‘on duty’ in the East Stand, both pre and post match and not to be forgotten Andy Johnson, now part of the Hawthorns matchday media team along with the perennial Tony Brown.
Although the result wasn’t quite what the Hawthorns faithful were looking for, it was an entertaining match, and indeed much to look forward too in the next few weeks.”
